Have you started planning for this year’s Tour de France?
Here at Les Beaux Chênes we’re already counting down the days! Only 15 days to go until the Tour de France sets off from Noirmoutier in the Vendée and heads down towards our gîte.
Since we opened Les Beaux Chênes three years ago we’ve become huge cycling fans and look forward to the Tour flying past us every summer. Whether you’re a cycling aficionado or you’re looking for a weekend break, there’s nothing better than packing up a French picnic and heading off to cheer the Peloton with a glass of wine. If you stay with us at Les Beaux Chênes you can catch the Tour near Pont-de-Barret, the beautiful village just up the road.
While you stay with us you can have your own cycling adventure. Take advantage of the incredible and largely undiscovered cycling routes around La Drôme. Remember you always have our huge private pool to come back to for some well-earned lounging around!
Le Drôme is a hidden gem
Les Beaux Chênes, which means ‘The Beautiful Oaks’, is in La Drôme, one of 8 departments in the little-known Rhône-Alpes section of France.
The Drôme gets its unusual name from the river that runs right through the middle of the region. With the Alpes on one edge and acres of lavender and sunflower fields on the other, the area is full of stunning landscape for you to explore.
The best part of cycling around Les Beaux Chênes is that the area is still a local secret. That means quiet roads all year round… even in the spectacular summer months!
Perfect for expert or amateur cyclists, couples or families.
We have the best French cycling routes for all levels
We’ve found that all 18 of the cycling routes mapped out by IGN are suitable for all cycling levels- from beginners, families right through to Tour de France addicts. Each route has very little traffic, good road surfaces and friendly drivers.
One of our favourite cycling trips is cycling east from Pont-de-Barret, our closest village, towards Saou. The roads on this route meander alongside the river, through a beautiful sheltered valley with hardly any traffic.
You can set off from your room at Les Beaux Chênes while the air is cool and fresh and stop at Soyans and Saou along the route, both have great cafés and restaurants. In a day you can easily cycle all the way to the historic city of Bordeaux for a glass of one of the fantastic local Côtes du Rhône Villages wines. Or stop at Saou and use it as a base to walk up the Roche Colombe peak, for a view over the whole region.
You’ll arrive back at the gîte ready for a refreshing shower and hungry for some of the local food including some of our famous local truffles. As each room has a kitchen, you can cook and sit out in the garden to eat under the stars.
The 2018 Tour de France route
This summer the Tour de France sets off on Saturday July 7th in Noirmoutier-en-L’Île in South-West France and arrives near us in mid-July. The Peloton will fly past us in the nearby town of Pont-de-Barret, one of the lovely villages in the undiscovered gem of La Drôme.
We’ll be organising a trip to cheer the group on and an evening meal to celebrate the great cycling event.
